Why choose me to help your child?

I am a child centred, integrated therapist, so my approach follows the non-directive Axline (1947) principles, which are shaped from the work of theorists such as Rogers, Maslow, Winnicott and attachment psychology.  The child can freely choose the mediums in the playroom and explore the themes that are most pertinent to them. The child is carefully tracked, utilising, as necessary, the strategies of the Play Therapy Dimension Model (Yasenil & Gardner 2004) to aid healing and change.

In other words, there are many ‘agents for change’ in Play Therapy, the methods and techniques I use will be decided as I get to know and understand the child. There is no fixed format.

Generally, I will start with the child leading the play from a choice of:

  • Sand and sand symbols (sandplay therapy)

  • Water, damp sand, mixing and messy materials

  • Arts and crafts

  • Clay and dough

  • Role play and small world, such as dolls house, medical kits, dress up

  • Construction

  • Games

  • Puppets

  • Books and individual therapeutic story

  • Creative visualisation

  • Music, instruments or dance
